After visiting the «Meridional Country», Empress Catherine the Great called Crimea «the best pearl» in the crown of the Russian Empire. The lush exotic nature, the landscape never before seen, the bright southern sun and the warm caressing sea were destined to admire and amaze.
The snow-white building of Livadia Palace looks very elegant against the background of the blue sea and fresh green of the park. The new Big Palace was built for Nikolay II by the Yalta architect N.Krasnov within seventeen months. 52 companies of many Russian cities took part in the palace complex construction but generally the participants were the Crimean inhabitants – Russians, Ukranians, Byelo-russians, Tatars, Greeks, Italians, Turks.
The style of the Renaissaince Italian palazzos the architect opted for helped him «combine the majestic palatial impression with the tranquillity of a county home». The aim of architekt Krasnov was, -the palace was to be placed on the undulating terrain, to be inserted organically into the rampant park to make all its parts open to the air and sunlight.
Particularly attractive is the Italian Courtyard with elegant columns, carved marble sofas and fountain and magnificent openwork gate.
«Sweet Livadia», – this is what the last Russian emperor called his Crimean estate. On September 20, 1911 , in a day of celebration of house-warming, Nikolay II wrote to his mother, Empress Maria Alexandrovna, about his first empressions : «We can’t find words to express our joy and pleasure to have such a house, built just as we wanted. » The museum exhibition tells visitors abour the life of the tsar family in Crimea.
The palace main rooms are connected with the work of historic Crimen (Yalta) conference of the leaders of three allied states of Anti-Hitler coalition – the USSR, the USA and Great Britain on February 4-11, 1945.
