The ornate Swallow’s Nest Castle at Yalta provides the perfect backdrop for the crowning of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series champion, live on Red Bull TV.
Englishman Gary Hunt secured his fourth successive competition win – a World Series record – in Boston 10 days ago and will once again take the honours in 2011.
The top positions are still fiercely fought over, with only the first six classified athletes able toadvance automatically to next year’s World Series so nail-biting cliff diving action until the very last dive from 26.5 metres is guaranteed in the final competition of the year.
With only one stop left, two athletes – Cyrille Oumedjkane (FRA) and Alain Kohl (LUX) – are tied in fifth position (45 pts), the still-recovering Colombian Orlando Duque is in seventh (40 pts) and, after a podium finish in his home event, only 10 points separates American Kent De Mond from a place in the top six.
Second and third place are also still hard fought, with only 12 points separating Artem Silchenko (RUS), in second, and Ukraine’s Slava Polyeshchuk, in fourth, with Michal Navratil (CZE) sandwiched in between.
Victory produces 20 points for the winner, while a fourth-placed finish is worth 11 – the Ukrainian diving fans can expect a thrilling finale.
Sunday’s competition will also feature the long-awaited return of Steve Black (AUS), with Blake Aldridge (GBR) and Gennadiy Kutsenko (UKR), the twin brother of Sacha, also appearing as wildcards.
